Countable nouns

Nouns can be count with numbers, they have plural form and a singular form.

 أسماء تستطيع عدها بالأرقام ويوجد منها صيغة المفرد والجمع

Examples:

There is a pen on the table.

There are some big houses in this city.

Uncountable nouns

Nouns can not be count with numbers, they are always singular form.

أسماء لا تستطيع عدها بالأرقام ويوجد منها صيغة مفرد فقط

Examples:

There is some juice in the fridge.

There is not any sugar.

How much & How many

In questions we use how many with plural countable nouns.

- How many eggs do we need?

and how much with uncountable nouns.

- How much water is there?

Some common examples of uncountable nouns

General (bread, ice, cheese, clothing, work, homework, money, furniture, luggage/baggage travel, traffic, research, electricity

Abstract (advice, information, knowledge, news,..) 

Liquids (tea, coffee,..) 

Gases (air,..)

Powders (flour, salt,..) 

Weather (snow, rain,..) 

Jewelry (gold, silver,..) 

Subjects (art, history,..)

Languages (Arabic, English,..)

Sports/activities (tennis, swimming,..)

Containers & measurements

We can only count those examples when we put them in a container or measurement.

نستطيع عد تلك الأمثلة عندما نضعهم في حاوية أو مقياس

Examples:

A cup of tea.

A slice of cheese.

A bottle of water.

A jar of juice.

A bowel of pasta.

A piece of ice.

A pound of butter.

A loaf of bread.

Clothing stores.

Games of tennis.

A tablespoon of honey.

A pinch of rice.

Articles, adjectives using with countable & uncountable nouns

Used with countable nouns only

1- A/An with singular.

Examples:

* I bought a meal for dinner.

* She sends an email address to her father.

2- Many with plural.

Examples:

* I have many lessons on my blog.

* There are many airplanes at the airport.

3- Few with plural countable nouns, it means few but enough.

تأتي مع الأسماء المعدودة بصيغة الجمع وتعني القليل ولكن كافي تأتي بصورة إيجابية

Example:

* Few of the students did not attend class.

4- A few with also plural countable nouns, it means few but not enough.

 تأتي مع الأسماء المعدودة بصيغة الجمع وتعني القليل ولكن غير كافي تأتي بصورة سلبية

* We have a few friends.

 Used with uncountable nouns only

1- much

Example:

* Jessica has much time to finish a project.

2- Little with uncountable nouns, it means little but enough.

تأتي مع الأسماء الغير معدودة وتعني القليل ولكن كافي تأتي بصورة إيجابية

Example:

* I have little money to buy a new phone.

3- A little with also uncountable nouns, it means little but not enough.

تأتي مع الأسماء الغير معدودة وتعني القليل ولكن غير كافي وتأتي بصورة سلبية

Example:

* John has a little tea for breakfast.

Used with countable & uncountable nouns

1- Any

تستخدم مع كليهما في حالة السؤال ولكن تستخدم في حالة النفي مع الأسماء الغير معدودة

Examples:

There is not any salt.

Are there any pens?

Is there any bread?

2- Some

تستخدم مع كليهما ولكن مع الاسماء المعدودة في صيغة الجمع فقط

Examples:

Do you want some pasta?

He has some useful books.

3- A lot of/ Lots of

many & much كلاهما لهم نفس المعنى وهو كثيرا ويمكن استبدالهم ب

Examples:

She has a lot of time.

They have lots of cars.
